With this year’s Halloween occurring on a Monday, the seniors of San Luis Obispo High School thought it would be an appropriate time to use their ditch day the following day. Senior ditch day is a strange event that precisely pinpoints the peak of teenage rebellion and privilege. It is also a cut. This begs the question, what are our seniors’ ideas on their day off? Expressions investigates the rebellious senior mind, and wonders if the office will be following up. SLOHS Expressions does not condone this behavior.
Expressions: Did you participate in Senior ditch day?
Senior AJ McCann: Unfortunately no, my parents are very strict about my attendance. They wouldn’t want me skipping school even if I was sick.
Senior Rocco Zundel: I kind of participated. I had a doctor’s appointment and I was out until 12. After that I didn’t go back to school for the fourth or fifth period. Even if there was no ditch day, I think most people would take the day off.
Senior Seth Wellman: Yes I did, and I’m not sorry.
Expressions: Did you enjoy your ditch day?
McCann: I mean not really. It was like any other day at school except the classrooms were empty.
Zundel: Yeah it was pretty chill. I was cruising around Paso Robles listening to my music playlist. Went home and watched TV without worrying about school.
Wellman: One of the better days of the school year because I got good sleep.
Expressions: Do you expect another Senior ditch day? If so, will you participate again?
McCann: I think there will be. Although I probably won’t participate, at least I may get extra credit in my classes (SLOHS Expressions does not condone teachers giving Extra Credit for, what, not ditching.)
Zundel: Of course, it’s our final year. I think we’re entitled to our freedom. The teachers aren’t going to like it. I think they were okay with this ditch day, but who knows the next one there may be consequences.
Wellman: I’m expecting more ditch days considering last year the seniors had like twenty of them.
Expressions: When’s the next senior ditch day?
McCann: I think the next ditch day should be the first day of the next trimester. It would probably be most appropriate since nothing is going on.
Zundel: I think it’ll be the last day before winter break. I want it to be sometime between January and March.
Wellman: Probably before a holiday, so we can get a long weekend or break.
Expressions: Do you think senior ditch day is appropriate?
McCann: I mean, yeah, it’s basically like a holiday and tradition. It deserves the same treatment as something like senior prank day or like April Fools. It shouldn’t be taken that seriously.
Zundel: It gives us a day of rest which is important at our age. It’s also a tradition parents and grandparents know about it.
Wellman: Yeah, it really brings us together as a community and shows that with teamwork anything is possible
