Every year San Luis Obispo High students nervously await the first trimester finals. For sophomores, juniors, and seniors, it’s been five months since they last conquered the battle of finals. But for this year’s freshman, it’s their first time.
“I’m nervous about my first finals, but also don’t really know what to expect. I’ve heard they are stressful and emotionally draining,” said freshman Athena Sterios.
Some teachers are lenient for ninth graders during the first trimester. They understand the transition from middle school to high school can be difficult. However, that doesn’t mean it’s a free for all.
“You should start reviewing your notes two weeks before finals. Then begin studying one and a half weeks before tests start. What helps me is a good cup of tea or chugging Celsius before I start to study. No pain no gain,” said senior Kiara Lopez.
Finals start on Wednesday,November 17, and end on Friday. This means in order to follow Lopez’s advice, reviewing starts on the third and studying should start on the seventh.
“Finals freshman year are pretty easy. Study what you understand and ask your teacher questions,” said senior Alana Castillo.
The first time taking finals can be stressful and nerve provoking. It’s important to study and be prepared as well as allowing yourself time to rest and rejuvenate. As long as SLOHS freshmen find a healthy balance between the two, all should go well. Put the phone down and study.
