With the San Luis Obispo High School 2022-2023 school year starting in a few weeks, incoming seniors are getting ready for their final year at SLOHS. Senior year is jam packed full of important dates and activities students must pay attention to as they get ready for their after high school plans. Whether it be college application season, sporting events, or dances, seniors are starting to feel the anxiety and excitement that comes with getting ready to graduate.
Expressions sat down with three incoming seniors to better understand how they are preparing for the year ahead.
Expressions: What aspect of your senior year are you most excited for?
Senior Allison Cadena: “Being the oldest group on campus is definitely going to be cool, and I’m excited for a hopefully normal school year. With the new field going in, going to sports events is going to be way easier and more fun than last year.”
Senior Amarah Gutierrez: “I’m most excited for all the events that happen during senior year. Homecoming week and going to football games with our new stadium is going to be wicked. I’m also super excited for my senior year soccer season.”
Senior Kylie Meas: “Being almost done with high school, it’s the final stretch! Also just being able to feel accomplished at the end of the year and enjoy it for the last time with some friends.”
Expressions: What aspect of your senior year are you most nervous about?
Cadena: “I’m not really nervous about much, but graduating and leaving is this weird mixture of scary and exciting.”
Gutierrez: “I’m probably most nervous about applying for colleges and awaiting those responses. Figuring out where I’m going to go and what I’m going to do in general is nuts.
Meas: “College applications and just preparing to leave in general; I don’t think I’ll ever be ready, but it’s still exciting for a new environment. I’m definitely also nervous about messing up everything I’ve set up for myself, but that’s a constant thing.
Expressions: What steps are you taking in order to get ready for college applications and college in general?
Cadena: “I went to look at a few colleges during the summer to better understand the vibe of it all. I’m also making a list of the pros and cons of all the schools I’m interested in, and hopefully I’ll get all my applications done early.”
Gutierrez: “I’ve been talking to my counselors and parents for the most part. I also started touring different colleges here in California just to see if I like the campus before applying.”
Meas: “Honestly, I haven’t prepared enough as I should have at this point. I’ve toured campuses and looked into a couple of scholarships, but I definitely need to get a heart start into filling out my common application and whatnot before I procrastinate until the last minute.”
Expressions: What are your goals for your final year of high school?
Cadena: “I just want to have fun and enjoy everything around me. I want to make as many memories with my friends as possible since this will probably be the last time we are all together in one place.”
Gutierrez: “Honestly, my goal is to not take any of this time for granted, since you never know what could happen, I mean, just look at how Covid-19 has affected so many people. I would also like to have fun and maintain a balanced life with sports and school work.”
Meas: “My big goal is to just have that feeling of being accomplished and ensuring that what I’ve done for these past four years was worth it. I want the end of my senior year to be fun and not stressful. I’ll keep working hard until I get to the finish line.”
