San Luis Obispo High School holds many talented students when it comes to the arts. These include a wide variety of instruments and even singer/songwriters. Expressions asked some of our musicians here on campus to share their thoughts on music and their personal experience with the art.
Expressions: What instruments do you play and how long have you been playing them?
Sophomore Mars Huebler: Trombone is my main instrument, I’ve been playing that for five years. I also play piano which I taught myself, I have been playing that since July of 2021.
Expressions: Where did you learn to play your instrument?
Sophomore Sydnee Leonardo: “I learned to play the guitar with my guitar teacher in sixth grade.
Huebler: I was taught trombone through school, and I used my music knowledge to teach myself piano.
Sophomore Becca McKee: “I learned just by looking up chord charts online and memorizing them.
Expressions: Do you write your own music?
Huebler: I do write my own music, I’ve played a lot of improv on my trombone and a lot of classical on my piano, lots of which I have written.
Expressions: What artists or bands have inspired you the most and why?
Huebler: The band that has influenced me the most is a little brass band called Lucky Chops. They are small but I saw them in concert and got to meet them in person. They are very amazing people who are very passionate about music.
Expressions: What is your favorite thing about music?
Huebler: The way to express emotion without needing to speak. It’s a universal language that can be expressed through any person.
Leonardo: “There are so many emotions that music can make you feel, and you can always depend on it when you need it. I can almost always find a song that connects to how I feel at any given moment.”
McKee: My favorite thing about music is that it lets you zone out and not focus on anything except what you are listening to.
