Last Tuesday at the San Luis Coastal Unified School District board meeting, parents both in person and over Zoom spoke to the board about the indoor mask mandate.
However, unlike Lucia Mar Unified School District and Atascadero Unified School District, there wasn’t the yelling or larger protest by comparison.
“There’s no statutory law [in the Constitution] that requires you, your employees, your customers, who are your students, to wear a mask, get their temperature taken, or stay six feet apart. …If you’re requiring your students to wear a mask or restrict their movement or entry, if they are not wearing masks, you are at risk for violating several federal and California state laws,” said parent Lauren Williams.
However, not many parents spoke to the board to ask them to repeal their indoor mask mandate.
“The vast majority of students and parents are fine with masks,” said local ER nurse and parent Lauren Slaughter.
There were only four parents that spoke against the indoor mask mandate.
Some of these protests against the mask mandates locally have been held by a division of the “pro-liberty” group, Moms for Liberty. The group originally started in January 2021, with two moms in Florida, both school board members.
The first California branch of Moms for Liberty was started in San Luis Obispo County and Moms for Liberty is still organizing protests outside of the SLO County Department of Health.
