Shoe company Converse has, over the last century, managed to become a huge legacy in fashion. Here at San Luis Obispo High School (SLOHS), one will always see someone wearing them.
Expressions talked to a few students and staff who regularly wear or have worn Converse.
“I like wearing them because I honestly just feel comfortable. In a way I feel like they represent my personality which makes me like to wear them. I used to wear them seven days a week, now I have cut back to only six,” said freshman Catherine Tucker.
The original sneaker was designed in 1917, but they first became popular when basketball legend Chuck Taylor picked up the shoes, which led them to be rebranded after his name.
Converse also became an important staple in the Grunge and Punk industry. In the ’90s, Converse appealed to skateboarding magazines such as Thrasher for their sturdiness and simple design.
Over the past decades, Converse has released new styles that have continued to make the brand more relevant in fashion. Platform and lugged converse have become popular as well as new colors and designs.
Despite this, Converse has shown that consistency is key. The original design of the shoe has barely changed since they were released in 1917. Compared to other brands, Converse has been amazingly consistent in the style of its shoes, which some believe is a reason for their continued popularity.
“I have even rocked a pair of One Stars, and I’m usually a Vans for life kind of guy,” said English teacher Scott Nairne.
Converse has surrounded itself with the top and current fashion brands, continuing to prove that they are a key in the fashion industry. Influential artists put their own spin on the shoe, adding new patterns, colors, and cuts.
Unlike the tons of current hyped-up sneakers, Converse continues to impress with their simple cut and versatility, making them a perfect staple in the daily routine of most SLOHS students.
