At San Luis Obispo High School we are fortunate to have a multitude of sandwich shops to choose from. High Street Deli. Lincoln. Mr.Pickles. Gus’s. All great choices, but all have some heavy pros and cons.
“My favorite sandwich shop in SLO is High Street Deli because I am supporting a small business and I believe their sandwiches are the best, along with their famous doobie snacks,” said senior Isabella Hoffmann.
High Street has gained an uncontrollable following and for good reason too. With much variety in types of sandwiches or salads, as well as good seating and a fitting name it makes sense. And who can argue with High Streets 4:20 special, that runs from 4:20 to 5:30 which discounts sandwiches to just seven dollars and fifty cents, an absolute steal. But, when walking in, crowds of college kids often overtake the pros of this sandwich shop, as well as the overly self conscious vibe some may get when being met with so many cool people. Hopefully crowds will minimize when High Street opens their second shop in Baywood Park this coming summer of 2021.
“ Lincoln is the best. The people are really nice and it’s a good location for a store. High Street takes too long,” said senior Grace Rubio.
Probably the oldest sandwich shop in SLO is Lincoln Deli, which has been “serving the community since 1941”. If they have been around for this long, their sandwiches must be good. With a cute gift shop that offers chips and drinks to compliment any sandwich, the wait is barely noticeable and rarely too long. A push for more outdoor seating and parking could be a nice asset to an already great shop.
Now Guses, with the closest proximity to San Luis Obispo High School has seemingly been falling short. With a quick visit there this week, a few things stand out. Not great options for vegetarians, no one cleans the outdoor seating ever, a tad bit on edge workers and it is very expensive. Thirty dollars for two expensive sandwiches, and not great sandwiches either. They just fall short, but still get my money due to optimism that the next sandwich will be better.
Now let’s talk about sandwich chains in SLO. Mr. Pickles, Subway and Jersey Mikes all deliver a reliable but yet tad blan sandwich to those who are in need of a quick bite to eat. Mr.Pickles cookies get an honorary mention in consideration to having something sweet after a savory sandwich. But, if the time arises in a SLOHS student’s life for a good fulfilling sandwich, expressions, recommends supporting locals and checking out one of the three main sandwich shops mentioned in this article.
