Last week, San Luis Obispo High School’s Expressions was taken on a tour around the newly built theatre next to the administration building by principal Leslie O’Connor. It did NOT disappoint and Tigers will be excited to be able to use the theatre for the upcoming film festival tonight and future performances!
Here were some of the highlights of the theatre tour.
This was the view of the theatre from the sound booth, with this gigantic stage and massive concrete floor in front. The ceiling is HUGE and the beams shown are similar to those inside of the Bay Theatre in Morro Bay.
The sound in the theatre is amazing, with these great walls similar to the Spanos Theatre at the PAC. This was taken on the stage, and here, we see the Expressions team with O’Connor and advisor Scott Nairne waving at me from this state of the art sound booth. The equipment in the sound booth is worth MILLIONS and it’s high tech and extremely professional for those working backstage.
The Green Room definitely reminds me of my times at the Cal Poly PAC on the big stage pre-COVID, with the lights, chairs, but since there’s only one Green Room, it’s comparably bigger to the one backstage at the PAC. At the moment, it is being used to store chairs for larger audiences beyond the scope of the four rows already built into the theatre. Needless to say, this goes completely against the rumor of how there was going to be no Green Room in the new theatre, causing outrage last year.
Featuring the shoulder of English teacher and Newspaper advisor Scott Nairne, the backstage is amazing to say the least. There’s a projector for possible assemblies, presentations, or showings like our SLOHS Film Festival this year that drops down at the beginning of the stage. Expressions was ecstatic about the tour and what this means for multiple programs in SLOHS’s near future. If you have the chance to go to the new theatre, check it out!
