San Luis Obispo High School sophomore Lucy Crew is hard at work raising money to save lives.
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) launched its Student of the Year fundraising campaign for this year; Crew was honored to be a candidate for the 2021 Student of the Year campaign along with her close friend and SLOHS sophomore Lexi Alltucker.
Crew and Alltucker’s team, “The Blood Blasters,” has the goal of raising $25,000 for those receiving treatment for, or in remission of a blood cancer.
The 7-week long fundraising campaign, running now through May 14, aids the mission of the LLS in its goal of discovering a cure for blood cancers, as well as assisting the patients and families that endure the tragic disease. These conditions have touched and continue to touch thousands of families every year, and she could not be more excited to be a part of the change made worldwide.
One example of the many families that benefit from the support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is the San Luis Obispo County Cota family.
Mateo Cota is a nine-year-old boy from Arroyo Grande, California. He was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2013, as he was nearing his 2nd birthday. After rigorous chemotherapy and monitoring in his blood work, Mateo has been in remission since October 21st, 2013. His older brother became his bone marrow donor in 2019. Mateo was able to overcome cancer with encouragement from friends, family, the medical community, and the efforts of the LLS.
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society needs your help more than ever. Blood cancers continue to affect people during the pandemic and render those struggling with the disease highly susceptible to severe complications if they contract the virus. The desire in taking part in this campaign is to raise awareness and help others like Mateo.
