As students at San Luis Obispo High School are becoming more exposed to current events, it’s important for them to develop their own opinions and judgments about the world around them.
Difficult or confusing information can be hard to understand for some, so Expressions interviewed junior Sabrina Garcia about her podcast, called “Teens Talk”, in which she discusses current events and why they matter to teenagers.
Expressions: What is your podcast called and what is it about?
Junior Sabrina Garcia: My podcast is called “Teens Talk”, and it strives to educate teenagers and young adults on how Supreme Court decisions and international policies affect them, as well as motivate young adults to participate in government.
Expressions: How did you get the idea to start this podcast?
Garcia: I came up with the idea in May, and I actualized it in July. I wanted to create a platform for teenagers to talk about all things politics regardless of one’s opinions. I did some research on podcasts on this topic and found inspiration from those successful podcasts.
Expressions: What topics do you cover?
Garcia: I cover a variety of topics, mainly current events and how teenagers can get involved. I also discuss past and present Supreme Court cases and their effect on us today. I’ve recently posted about the role of USPS in the 2020 election as well as the global reactions to the Black Lives Matter Movement.
Expressions: Why are these subjects important to students at SLOHS?
Garcia: The topics I cover are extremely relevant to SLOHS students because the topics directly affect our society, environment, economy, etc. Also, the policies that are made now are going to create the environment that SLOHS students are going to enter when they pursue their respective careers.
Expressions: What is your goal for this podcast?
Garcia: My goal is for teenagers to get excited and educated about participating in our democracy. I find that a lot of teenagers are somewhat fearful of all of the policies the government created because it seems so foreign and incomprehensible.
