During these Coronavirus times it is very important that we find activities that uplift our spirits and bring light to others lives. Many teachers, students, and staff members have been getting creative with activities to keep them busy! Expressions interviewed Ms. Acebo and she shared that she has been keeping busy by playing the guitar and singing.
Expressions: What inspired you to start playing the guitar and singing?
SLOHS Spanish teacher Joanne Acebo: I have been singing my entire life. Learning to play guitar made it more fun.
Expressions: Do you think that you influenced your children to play instruments while they were growing up or did they naturally get into playing instruments on their own?
Acebo: A little of both. I was playing, singing and writing songs when they were young. I gave Josh his first guitar when he was 8. We always had music playing in the house too. Around junior high the two older boys switched from sports to music.
Expressions: Have you ever featured in one of your son’s songs? If not, do you think that is something you would like to do at some point?
Acebo: Not ever featured in their music. Josh will record me this weekend. Yes I would love that.
Expressions: What is your favorite part about being able to play the guitar?
Acebo: It’s fun!
Expressions: I’m your opinion, why do you think music is important for the soul?
Acebo: It’s a creative outlet that nurtures a person. I often make up chords. They probably have names but it doesn’t matter. I like hearing different sounds even if they are ugly. Each sound represents a different mood.
Expressions: Would you ever want to become a guitar teacher?Acebo: No. I’ll leave that to the experts.
