Prom 2020 can be added to the list of COVID-19’s social casualties. For many juniors and seniors at San Luis Obispo High School, this cancellation was just another addition to the list of 2020’s disappointments, but that didn’t stop all of them from having a prom of their own. Seniors Jahan Ramezani and Wyatt Dodd, juniors Evan Clausen, Sonja Cowgill, Evelyn Harding, Maggie Zuniga, Celia Lober, Kaylie Hall, Rory Svetich, and Jayda Monreal, and freshman Lindsay Smith were all in attendance at Minecraft Prom 2020.
“I didn’t even realize it was prom night until someone told me, so I popped on the server like two hours early with Evelyn. We opened up some Google images of Mountainbrook Church and just got to work,” said Ramezani.
You heard that right: Minecraft Prom included a replica build of the common SLOHS prom venue, Mountainbrook Church.
“I’m pretty proud that we managed to finish the build in time. It was ready by 9PM,” said Ramezani.
Prom-goers arrived just after 9PM, and the party truly started when minecarts took the party people to the venue via a rail built by Ramezani.
When asked what the highlights of Minecraft Prom were, the answers were quite diverse.
“The highlight of Minecraft Prom for me was when Jahan played my favorite song even though everyone is super tired of it. I know that in actual prom the DJ would never play ‘Potter Waltz,’ which is part of the score in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, so it really made Minecraft Prom extra special,” said Monreal.
And just like a normal prom, there were some profoundly emotional experiences as well.
“My highlight of Minecraft Prom was crying in the bathroom while ‘Mr. Brightside’ played,” said Svetich.
You heard that right: Minecraft Mountainbrook came complete with bathrooms. Bathrooms which were of course not safe from other antics.
“I enjoyed secretly removing urinals from the men’s bathroom,” said Ramezani.
Though Minecraft prom was a unanimous success, all are hopeful that a real prom is somewhere in the near future.
