Staying up until one or even two in the morning and sleeping in till twelve is a practice that most students at San Luis Obispo High Schools summers consist of.
“My sleep schedule is pretty bad, I took two consecutive naps yesterday and then couldn’t go to sleep till one a.m.,” said SLOHS graduate Hannah Peterson. Here are some tips to getting back on that sleep schedule to prepare for that back to school grind.
If you adjust the amount of light you intake before bed, your body will produce a hormone called melatonin that helps you relax when it is time to sleep. Camping or sleeping somewhere that has high natural light exposure lets you get in a natural rhythm. You will wake up and go to bed with the sun.
Another way is to gradually go to bed and wake up earlier even if it is only by 15 to 30 minutes. Cutting back on naps would help you regulate going to bed on time because your body will be naturally tired at bedtime.
Tiring yourself out by keeping busy throughout the day can get you ready to go to bed at an earlier time. For example, exercising and then meditating can help you wind down and will naturally tire you out. Experimenting with different ways to fall asleep naturally and finding out what works best for you is what’s important.
