San Luis Obispo High School football practice has been happening since the end of 2018 and 2019 school year. SLOHS students are currently practicing for tryouts, which will take place in a month. Coming off their best season in a long time, the tigers are hoping to come back even stronger mentally, emotionally, and physically.
The summer season schedule for varsity consists of weight training, drills, conditioning, and pres-season games. Players have weekends off and practices are during the week from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
“My summer training schedule is mainly during the week, then players get the weekend to recover. Coaches are pretty good about giving players the time we need to recuperate and be kids,” said junior Thomas Cole.
Physical Education teacher Patrick Johnston has been the head coach for the varsity football team for five years. “Summer training is mainly to get the players prepared for the season. We are doing a lot of strength and conditioning. Also going over install plays, watching various films, and playing diagrams. My goal by the time summer is over is for all players to be able to have all the plays and techniques burned into their brain. Football is a very mental sport, and I am looking for players that have a good understand of the scheme, and technique,” said Johnston.
Incoming senior Emilio Corona is going to be the quarterback for the 2019-2020 season. Last school year Corona was the starting quarterback and one of the five captains.
“My leadership goal is important. I think leading by example and being a good influence for the incoming freshman class and younger classes. I want to show them that hard work will play off. Also teaching them a good work ethic. A personal goal would be to win league MVP. A lot of our team, and skilled players are coming back and that’s good. I honestly think we should be undefeated which is everyone’s goal. To win a league title and CIF championship at home would obviously be a great thing. We are all capable and able do that,” said Corona.
