Several students at San Luis Obispo High School are working over the summer, at jobs ranging from being a camp counselor, working at Subway, to working at a local grocery store. The legal age to work in the state of California is fourteen. However, certain jobs require students that are fifteen and a half years and older. Expression went out to ask students about their summer jobs.
Expressions: What is your summer job, and what are you doing there?
Senior Katie Cole: I am a lifeguard at the San Luis Obispo Swim Center, also known as Sinsheimer Pool.
Junior Andrew Daymude: I am going to be tutoring fourth graders, at a summer school.
San Luis Obispo High School Graduate Julio Moreno: I am a waiter and dishwasher at Panchos.
Expressions: Why did you decide to have a summer job?
Cole: I wanted to do something with kids, and teach them at swim lessons. Also, I thought it would look good on my resume and for college.
Daymude: I want money, and because my dad wants me to engage with kids.
Moreno: I wanted to get a job because I need money.
Expressions: What advice would you give to students that want to work over the summer?
Cole: Find something that you are interested in, and make sure you can fully commit to it.
Daymude: Make sure you’re not late and get to know the parents and kids.
Moreno: Start interviewing a couple of weeks before summer starts, so you can find the right job.
Expressions: What do you plan to do with the money you earn?
Cole: I am going to save most of it, and probably spend money on clothes and a swimsuit to wear for work.
Daymude: To save up for college.
Moreno: I am saving up money for a new car.
Expressions: What is the best part of your job?
Cole: I like to see kids improve in swimming, and I like to see the kids become water safe. Also, I like meeting new people.
Daymude: Helping kids understand a concept.
Moreno: Getting food sometimes, and the people.
