Despite making it to an international robotics competition a year or two ago, the San Luis Obispo High School Robotics Club rarely gets enough coverage. That all changes now.
Robotics club, located in room 400 and supervised by Mr. Crow, lets you get together and build robots as a team.Overall, it’s a club that you can compete in, have fun in, and make friends in. Looking deeper into the club, TNN and Expressions interviewed Computer Science teacher and Robotics Club supervisor Steven Crow.
Expressions: What is Robotics Club?
Robotics Club supervisor Steven Crow: Robotics is a club where students get together to learn about robots. They build robots, they code robots, we take robots to different competitions and compete.
Expressions: Why do you think Robotics Club is fun and important for everyone?
Crow: Robotics is a great experience for all students. There’s definitely a social aspect to it, there’s a lot of collaboration. Most teams have some people that are designated as builders, others who are really more into the coding, some others are better at interfacing with other teams and so they’re working on the strategy or forming alliances with teams from other schools. I really love the fact that it’s hands-on, it’s engineering, it’s math, it’s science, all in a fun environment.
Expressions: Why should people join Robotics Club?
Crow: Robotics really is a club for everyone. There are so many different facets of it that there’s something for everyone. If you’re into record keeping and documenting things, we need people making notebooks. We need people to cad their robots if you’re good at digital design. If you’re good at hands on things, we’ve got places for that. If you’re really into coding, and you want a coding challenge, we do that as well. All of that is within a social environment where people are talking, working together, and having fun. Some teams show up and just build robots together a couple times a week and they care less about competitions, so it’s really a one size fits all sort of club, there’s something here for everyone.
Robotics club started as a simple club where people got together and just started to build some tech. Now, the robotics club is taking home victory trophies in competitions, going to state competitions, national competitions, and even further. Tigers, come to room 400 if you want to be involved in this amazing, interactive and welcoming club.
