Students everywhere have always had a knack for destroying technology, but the damage is propelled one step further with the new trend of finding eccentric ways to destroy one’s chromebook. Even students at San Luis Obispo High School find themselves demolishing their school-issued laptops. But why?
“I was in fourth period and we were just messing around and someone had the idea of putting lead into their chromebook and it kinda sparked. Nothing really happened his chromebook was ok and we just laughed it off and that was it,” said sophomore Jason Mitchell.
Although chromebook damage isn’t always catastrophic, it could pose a risk to a chromebook’s function and even students’ safety.
“The main reason why I see people do it is because they think it’s funny to damage school property. In my opinion I think it only harms the school and is a waste of technology that someone else can use,” said freshman Joseph Spargo.
Although some people think it’s a funny use of time, clearly there are still those who feel that it wastes the school’s valuable resources. Sophomore Curtis Craig points out, however, that the destruction can serve a poignant purpose of entertainment, even if it has overpowering consequences.
“In ninth grade I was with my friends and they brought up the “lead trend’. I was not willing to try but I stayed and watched. They stuck a pencil led into the USB port and waited for it to smoke. It was entertaining but besides that did not really have a purpose. Overall it was not worth the risk of paying for it he damages,” said Craig.
Consequences could be greater than just paying for damages. Students can get hurt, and damage isn’t necessarily confined to a singular student’s chromebook.
Tigers, whatever the cause, vandalizing school property is hardly worth the laugh.
