As weather heats up and summer is here, San Luis Obispo High students are gearing up for beach days, outdoor adventures, and fun in the sun.
But before you head out to soak up in the sun, it’s important to remember one thing that can protect your skin from the harmful effects of UV radiation- sunscreen.
“Sunscreen is so important especially here in slo and avila where the UV rays are so high,” said senior Sama Alzariee. “Many people think they only need sunscreen on super hot days, but the UV is what matters, it could be overcast and still have a UV of 10.”
San Luis Obispo’s sunny climate makes it a great place to enjoy outdoor activities, but it also increases the risk of sunburns and long-term skin damage.
For highschool students like senior Athena Sterios sunscreen is a must-have.
“Since I have such fair skin I burn really fast. If I don’t use sunscreen I am in trouble,” said Sterios.
It is recommended to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and apply it every two hours, especially if you’re swimming or sweating.
The good news is that sunscreen doesn’t have to be a hassle, Many options are now available. Sticks, creams, spray ons, they’re easy to apply before a hike, game, or a beach day.
“I love my supergoop sunscreen. I keep it on me at all times.” said 2025 graduate Sofia Waggoner.
So whether you’re lounging by the pool or playing soccer at the park, remember tigers, to protect your skin and enjoy a fun, safe summer in SLO!
