A silly little tradition at San Luis Obispo High School for many years was the Mock Rock competition. After ending over a decade ago, the lip sync battle is back in 2025!
Mock Rock at SLOHS began in the early 1980s. It’s a competition where students can get together with their friends and create a performance lip syncing to songs or mashups with full on dance numbers, props, and costumes.
“There is music, dancing, costumes, and tons of dedication to provide high level entertainment for everyone in the crowd. Think Tom Holland’s famous ‘Umbrella’ lip sync with equal talent but only a fraction of the budget. A panel of judges will decide the top three teams at the end, however the main goal of the event is for everyone to have fun,” said Friday Night Live Coordinator Brandon Covarrubias.
At the winter rally on January 31 a group of student volunteers and staff put on a dance performance. While most students enjoyed the show, not many got the point; it was used to announce and promote the return of Mock Rock. Their dance is an example of a Mock Rock entry.
“I saw the rally dance about Mock Rock but didn’t know what it was for at the moment. But then in my PE class my teacher was talking about it and I was like ‘yes I want to do that,’” said freshman Loujayn Chafroud.
To enter the competition, students can find the google form and information documents on their grade levels’ google classroom. This form must be completed by March 21, but the sooner submitted the better.
Contestants also must submit a tryout video that meets all requirements listed in the informational document by March 21. While it doesn’t have to be a full performance, it must be at least 45 seconds long and a lyrics sheet for the music must be included.
The show takes place on April 11 and there will be a dress rehearsal on April 10. If not wishing to participate, students can purchase tickets for five dollars and come to watch the show that evening.
“We’ve had multiple teams sign up so far, and we’re expecting many more once we start heavily advertising. The prize money is definitely a motivator, but that’s just an added bonus to the rewarding nature of the event. Given how big the event was at SLOHS before, we’re excited to see the turnout this year,” said Wellness Club president senior Lana Goodman.
If choosing to compete, students can win $200 if they place first. Second will receive $100 and third will take home $50.
While it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, Mock Rock will be a fun and entertaining way to plan something with friends and maybe make some money in the process.
