Every new school year brings fresh ideas and experiences to the table at San Luis Obispo High School. One of those at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, with the implementation of Dance I and Dance II classes at our school.
These classes are a fun way to spend an elective period, or even get PE credits, making them an exciting addition to our school. Some students may wonder whether this new option could mean a possible dance company at SLOHS.
“I absolutely see the potential for a dance company at SLOHS. It would provide students with more performance opportunities and help build a stronger dance community. I believe this would be a fantastic program that could grow alongside our current dance classes,” said Dance instructor Mandi Mettler.
The introduction of a whole new program doesn’t always happen easily, and they always require support, but it’s amazing to see new communities form with additional opportunities incorporated into our school.
The dance classes themselves are loved by many of their students, who now get to learn a new art form during school hours.
“I enjoy the fact that we get to learn not only about the dances themselves but the history of dance. It’s been very interesting to gain a greater knowledge of where certain dances come from while we’re doing them!” said senior Kiana Blau.
It is a healthy way to break up the day and get students involved in a more energetic and connected environment.
“I think it’s a great outlet for students to express themselves and it gives them a break from all the tedious classes throughout the day,” said junior Cali Doan.
Other opportunities, such as Dance club, and a possible showcase at the end of the year, allow for students to become part of the group even if their schedule doesn’t allow them to take the class. SLOHS is full of talented students and Dance is another way to build community and new experiences.
“My biggest goal right now is to increase student involvement in creating our first-ever Dance Showcase at the end of the year. Many passionate dancers at SLOHS aren’t able to take Dance class due to packed schedules, but this showcase would provide them with a chance to perform and be part of our growing dance community,” said Mettler.
So Tigers, if you’re looking for an elective, or a way to break up the day and have some fun, opting to take a dance class could be a great choice!
