In this last Presidential election, on November 6, former president Donald J. Trump was the overwhelming winner and claimed himself another four years in office. People around the country have mixed opinions on what will happen next for themselves, their fellow citizens, and the country, and the students here at San Luis Obispo High School are no exception.
After a few interviews, Expressions has gathered some opinions about the matter from SLOHS students.
“I think it is important to know that a lot of people are going to be disappointed either way, but I think it is a good thing that Trump is in office,” said freshman Barrett Self.
Despite many concerns, Trump being in office could be good.
“[Trump in office means] lowered inflation and more affordable things, better relations with foreign countries,” said Self.
Some students believe having Trump returning to office would be beneficial for the country.
“There could be lower gas prices for student drivers and seniors can afford more things to get a good start in the world,” said Self.
There are many different perspectives of the debate, and students are trying to find a middle ground on the benefits of Trump going back into office.
“For a temporary period the taxes will reduce like his last term, but nothing long,” said freshman William Borgsmiller.
But not all students agree that Trump’s return to presidential power would be a very good thing for the entirety of Trump’s four year term.
“He would pull us out of NATO and even though this will help us economically, it would be leaving our European allies behind. He would also allow the state to decide abortion laws and cause in-country disputes that can damage relationships,” said Borgsmiller.
It didn’t stop there as other students started to make more points against Trump.
“Something bad that could come from the outcome is that people begin to lose what they had, such as rights, said in many articles: Trump is a homophobic and transphobic person and people I know who are trans, gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, etc. could start to lose the rights they fought hard to have. Same goes for women since people have been saying he will make it harder for women to receive things like birth control. Immigrants will have a harder time now since Trump has outwardly said racist things towards immigrants,” said freshman Milla Watts.
So now that Trump will be returning to office in January of 2025 the conversation surrounding the years to come continues on. But in the end it all means nothing, we all just have to watch and see what the future will unfold.
