The mountain biking club at San Luis Obispo High School is launching off to a great start this year. This club is a fun, inviting space for students to join, and it is packed with exciting activities, such as a trip to Santa Cruz in December.
This unique club offers lots of support and inclusivity, regardless of a student’s experience in mountain biking.
“Mountain biking is a super-inclusive sport that anyone can join. It differs from others because you can be at any skill level and still be able to do a lot of things. It gets the adrenaline pumping, builds outstanding fitness, and you can have a good time every time you ride,” said junior Gabe Jantos.
This club offers plenty of opportunities for students to ride bikes anywhere. It is a great hobby to get into and could be a potential career.
Originally, the club was started to get student interest for NICA, which is the National Interscholastic Cycling Association. English teacher Scott Nairne is a level one coach for the race team, which is not an SLOHS affiliated sport.
“Students from all over the county that have all different level of skills riding a bike have one thing in common: they are welcome to sign up and race NICA,” said Nairne.
“Mountain bike club is really cool because we have trails right here in SLO that we can ride. It’s really easy to go on a ride after school or on the weekend,” said junior Georgia Keeling.
The mountain biking club gets students into riding bikes. It’s not only a great community, but it’s also a casual place for students to socialize.
“The purpose of this club is to get more people riding bikes because it is a great sport many don’t know about. Our meetings are super laid back and fun; you can do whatever you want, and we always have some fun antics going on,” said Jantos.
The community is filled with engaging events, which contribute to the uniqueness of the club. This is a great way to get involved at SLOHS, and it comes with the perks of welcoming students and new opportunities.
“We have a very exciting event coming up, The Querchuis Klasic. Every year we have a competition with prizes. We are also planning trips to ride in Santa Cruz,” said Keeling.
If you’re interested in a fun, engaging, and laid-back community, join the mountain biking club! The club meets every Tuesday upstairs at lunch in Nairne’s room 203. For more information, email [email protected].
