With another school year at San Luis Obispo High School kicking off, incoming students and returning Tigers alike have their fair share of excitement ahead of them. For many students, one of the biggest questions that’s asked is “how can I increase my success at SLOHS?”
Thankfully, Expressions decided to interview 2024 SLOHS graduate Camilo Baltodano on his time as a Tiger, and what advice he’d give to incoming students.
Expressions: First of all, who are you exactly?
Camilo Baltodano: My name is Camilo Baltodano. I am from the SLOHS class of 2024. I graduated last summer and I am currently attending the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Expressions: At SLOHS, what were the things that gave you the most success?
Baltodano: Firstly the teachers I had were really amazing and inspirational. They inspired me to work hard and pursue my interests, namely Mrs. Arata, Mr. Perry, and Mr. Ross. The second thing is having access to a ton of great clubs. I was in Mock Trial, Harvard Model Congress, and National Honors Society. They’ve all been really great as well.
Expressions: What was the best part about SLOHS for you?
Baltodano: The best part for me was that I was really able to find community. I felt welcomed into campus. I felt like I was able to know a lot of people, get involved, make a positive impact, and I just enjoyed coming to school because of how beautiful the campus is.
Expressions: With another school year starting, what’s the best advice you could give incoming freshmen, or any other SLOHS students nervous about the start of another year?
Baltodano: Incoming freshmen should just take advantage of all the opportunities. Join different clubs, meet new people, find stuff that you’re interested in and that makes you happy. I feel like that served me really well. Just enjoy your time on the campus. For seniors, senior year is very busy but just remember that this is the final stretch. Keep working hard, have balance, and make time to enjoy the things that you like to do.
For any students who are nervous about beginning another year, be sure to take the advice from Baltodano. It will absolutely be a big help.
And for Camilo, good luck in college and beyond!
