After ten years of caution tape, jackhammers, and construction vehicles, students at San Luis Obispo High School have been missing out on a large part of their high school experience.
The constant construction on the campus made simply walking around and learning unbearable. But after years, the construction is finishing and the campus finally feels like home.
“As a freshman and a sophomore, the majority of the Commons and the cafeteria was closed off. You couldn’t really navigate through the upper part of the school,” said senior Angel Tepepa.
Seniors at SLOHS started their freshman year on distance learning, and then spent much of sophomore and junior year in portable classrooms. Even after the years of misplacement, the impact of the construction was still felt.
“It was very loud, it always felt like the construction would happen during essays or tests which made it very annoying… It was also still a lot harder to get around,” said senior Camilo Baltodano.
However, all this frustration has come to a close. During the last few months of the school year, students are enjoying the results of all the hard work. The new and improved stadiums, walkways, and classrooms are offering the perfect environment for students to enjoy their time at SLOHS.
“Incoming students at SLOHS will likely have a different experience from mine. They’ll benefit from modernized classrooms, improved technology, and enhanced amenities,” said freshman Gibran Covarrubias.
It’s clear that the experience at SLOHS is evolving and improving for students every day. For underclassmen and incoming students, they will get to enjoy a completely new campus.
“I think [incoming students] will see a fully finished, fully furnished, brand new school,” said Tepepa.
Now, it’s up to the students to decide how they want to soak in the campus.
