While most San Luis Obispo High School students headed into spring break, something major was going down in the world of FFA. Multiple SLOHS students took part in the parliamentary procedure and leadership contest.
“The parliamentary procedure contest is a contest where students debate in a mock meeting using the rules of parliamentary procedure from Roberts’s Rule of Order. Along with the mock meeting, students take a knowledge test and answer verbal questions about parliamentary procedure knowledge,” said FFA chapter president Siena Boscaro.
Boscaro is an experienced member in the realm of FFA. Being a chapter president is quite a big responsibility.
During the contest, the novice team (first-timers, mostly) placed in the top 24 in the state, and the advanced team placed 4th. But, winning isn’t the only important part of the contest.
“Parliamentary Procedure is very fun, fast-paced, and logic-based. It also connects you with new people across the state, fostering many great friendships,” said sophomore Gabe Jantos.
Freshman Ethan Chen also went. Although he was not on the advanced team, he still had a great time and worked hard.
“I thought it was very fun, especially the car trips. We did okay, but we will try to do better next time,” said Chen.
Both Chen and Jantos enjoyed themselves and would recommend it to others.
“I hundred percent recommend this for all people, even if you don’t enjoy speaking because it helps you with all aspects of speaking, and also helps socially,” said Jantos.
Overall, the parliamentary procedure and leadership contest allowed San Luis Obispo High School students to develop their skills and make new connections.
If you’re a student looking for a fun and challenging experience, consider joining FFA and participating in the parliamentary procedure contest!
