Most students at San Luis Obispo High School use social media to connect and interact with their friends. One of these social media sites is TikTok, but a ban has been proposed once more. What are the true details of the ban?
“I like the ban but just because it’ll help people get out more and stop being so glued to their phones,” said sophomore Kai Kelly.
TikTok is a social media site owned by ByteDance, a company based in China, although it has many satellite locations. The House of Representatives passed a bill stating that if ByteDance did not sell its stake to an American corporation by a six-month deadline, TikTok would be banned in the United States. It is also argued that this action would be a violation of the First Amendment.
“I understand people thinking [that it is a violation]… having a ban on TikTok will not remove anyone’s ability to share their thoughts to the population,” said Kelly.
Many also question the need for this ban.
“I feel like it’s unnecessary… people would definitely resort to other social media [apps],” said sophomore Ella Blair.
Whether or not the ban is needed or not, it’s very possible that it will go through, so it may be time to transition to a new site.
