Music is a very important aspect of daily life at San Luis Obispo High School. Indeed, a lot of students listen to it with headphones during break and sometimes during classes. But what music are students listening to?
For many students, music is not just a pastime but an integral part of their lives, providing solace, motivation, and a sense of belonging. The diverse musical palette that spans across genres and eras demonstrates the rich tapestry of high school culture.
Expressions interviewed a diverse range of students, from all walks of life and backgrounds, to capture a comprehensive view of their musical inclinations. Among the top genres identified, hip-hop emerged as one of the favorites, with its electrifying beats and poignant lyrics striking a chord with a significant portion of the student body.
Senior Colin Dean, a devoted pop enthusiast, shared his perspective on the genre’s appeal.
“Pop speaks to the real issues we face as young people today. It’s like our generation’s voice, and it’s raw and honest,” said Dean.
However, pop isn’t the only style that left its mark. After surveying a good number of students, we can definitively say that one of the favorite musical types is rap music.
“I love rap music, all my friends love rap music. Everywhere I am with people my age in a car, a house, rap music is always the style that comes the most. We can notice that artists like Travis Scott or Drake are more famous than jazz artists or k-pop,” said senior Marco Petterson.
Finally, another style which is way more popular than people think is electronic dance music (EDM).
“I love electronic music. I especially love it when I’m at an event. EDM is all about the experience. The energy, the lights, and the unity you feel at a festival are indescribable,” said junior Ivan Delgado.
SLOHS students listen to a variety of different types of music. Rap stays on of the leaders of most students, but other styles like EDM and pop are genres present in the hearts of SLOHS students.
