San Luis Obispo High School has many sports, and now that the season is in full swing it’s time to check up on the Girls’ Tennis team and their impressive undefeated record.
On Thursday, September 21, the team defeated Arroyo Grande High School’s tennis team 8-1, in a home game, and this is just the latest of their court-sweeping games.
“This year we’ve done really well and we’ve swept most of the teams in our league, like winning 9-0. It’s just overall really fun, our coach has created a really positive environment too,” said junior Audrey Conover.
Tennis has been an area of SLOHS success for years, but it isn’t supported or advertised nearly as much as other sports.
“It will always be hard for us as tennis players to be the loudest in the room about our accomplishments when there are ‘bigger’ sports that bring in more revenue, but that’s ok. I am so proud of this team and will shout it from the rooftops. I am also someone who would rather let my talent and hard work speak louder than my voice and this team is showing SLOHS what they are made of and how strong they are and that we are one of the best teams in this CIF section,” said new Girls Tennis coach Michelle Heidbrink.
Winning scores are a commonality, almost a given for their team, but that does not mean they slack off! The SLOHS Tennis team works really hard and deserves their high scores.
“[I’m] so proud of how the team has come together to compete and fight match after match! It has been really fun to watch everyone grow on and off the court! We are so lucky to have so many talented players that even through injuries and illness, other members of the team have been able to step up and find success,” said Heidbrink.
Growth is always achievable, even when your team is already so great. With the recent defeat of the AGHS Eagles, SLOHS’s biggest rival, the Girls Tennis team is really on a roll.
“We played great against AG considering they are the hardest team in our league, and they are always a tough match, but I feel like everyone rose to the occasion and played their best,” said Conover.
Tennis is a fun sport that has an awesome community, and is action-packed to watch! On October 5 at 3:30 on campus, they are hosting a “TOGETHER WE FIGHT CANCER” match to raise funds for Cancer research and awareness.
Let’s get some Tiger support out there!
