Like students, many teachers at San Luis Obispo High School have big summer plans. Traveling, hiking, going to the beach, hanging out with friends and family, and relaxing are on the agenda for both students and teachers this summer, and Expressions sought to find out more about teachers’ big plans.
“I am grading AP (Advanced Placement) Stats tests. I’m super excited; I’m doing it from home. There’s 300 teachers going to Kansas City to grade, and there’s like 700 of us doing it from home. Then the five of us in my family are taking a trip to Alaska. We’re gonna rent a motorhome and drive it around Alaska for a couple weeks. Then, my wife and I are gonna go to Colorado in the first week of August and go to a concert and hang out with some friends. It’s a bunch of different Christian singers,” said math teacher Blake Bristol.
Similarly, American Sign Language teacher Kristen Nusbaum has big traveling plans with her family for the summer.
“I will travel to Las Vegas for a few weeks, right after graduation until about the first week of July, and then we have my in-laws and my nephews coming for their first California visit. It’ll be really fun to do a bunch of California-themed things. Then after that, we’re gonna go to Disneyland for a few days and take a cruise to Mexico. Normally we spend time traveling instead of being in town,” said Nusbaum.
For Nusbaum, three kids means constantly running around and finding various forms of entertainment during the summer.
“We don’t really have a typical summer, so a typical summer day for us would be going to the Ravine, since we have season passes there, or going to Magic Mountain or Disneyland or Gilroy Gardens, because we love theme parks. So either we’re swimming with waterslides or we’re going to theme parks, and that’s our summer day,” said Nusbaum.
Along with Bristol and Nusbaum, biology teacher Trenton Rubio plans to balance time exploring and relaxing in SLO with travel.
“I will be here for the first five weeks of summer coaching water polo, and then in July I’ll be doing a bunch of things. I’m jumping around, going out to Colorado to Boulder, and then I’m gonna go to the Grand Teton National Park, and then I’m going to Mexico for a bit to surf. My friends are getting married around that time, and I’m in the wedding. I will probably try to explore other summer things to do, too. There won’t be too many waves, but I get to the beach when I can. Big Sur is really close, so I’ll probably try to explore that area and maybe search for more food spots in SLO,” said Rubio.
With so many things to do in town and so many places to visit, this summer SLOHS teachers are busy enjoying the sun and the break.
Unless you are Mr. Nairne.
“I will be staying in my room for exactly two and a half months, lesson planning and practice grading while I read SLOHS Expressions daily,” said Nairne.
