The San Luis Obispo High School Boys basketball season, so far, has been tough, but athletes and coaches expect to see it improve. While the girls team is having a better start to their season.
The boys varsity team lost their first five games putting their season off to a poor start. On December 11 and 12 2021, the boys played a tournament at Arroyo Grande high school where they won for the first time in their season. Their current record is 1-9.
There are a number of reasons why the team this year is struggling: players are out because of COVID protocols/sicknesses and losing a lot of their senior players because of other obligations. This left the team with about half of its players.
Clayton Miller the head coach of the varsity basketball team is optimistic about his team’s season “We play hard. Sometimes the outcome is not what we maybe want, but the kids compete. We expect to continue to get better and keep competing. And hopefully we get better, but they just keep coming and working hard. And that’s all we can ask.”
Players on the team are optimistic as well. “Looking forward, I expect that we can turn our season around. And get some wins” said junior Nolan Attala, varsity basketball team athlete. Attala, even though he has had a rough start to the season, is optimistic they can still be successful by the end of it.
Over on the girls varsity team, they’ve started their season strong with a 5-6 record so far. While only have played one league game, their league record is 1-0.
The girls still have ten more league games after Winter Break and we’re excited to see what they can do.
“We’re definitely turning a corner and we’re still making progress. You know, it’s still the beginning of the season and we’re still trying to figure out who we are as a team but we’re working well together and it’s been strong so far,” says returning junior Carys Villani.
This year, the girls moved down a league and that’s given them the opportunity to work on things during the season that they weren’t able to work on before. It’s also given the opportunity for some underclassman to shine through, such as Dilpinder Thandi, Charlotte Dierks, and Diana Pruett.
We’re excited to see not only what the girls have in store but the boys as well. Lets go and support all our fellow Tigers for the rest of their season!
