The Academy Awards are arguably the biggest award show in the entertainment industry, however do San Luis Obispo High School students even care?
The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, occur annually, usually in late February or early March, although this year they are being held on February 9. The award show is iconic for honoring the past years cinematic masterpieces.
Expressions set out to discover what students really know about the Oscars.
“It’s interesting to see the changing interest in pop culture all condensed into one award show,” says senior Elizabeth Redfern. The Oscars comprise of 24 categories, but only one nominee from each section will win.
“If any movie deserves to win best picture, it should be ‘Frozen 2’,” said senior Christian Clegg.
Senior Erik Pascual believes Rob Lowe should win best actor.
Although “Frozen 2” may have been a fantastic movie, and Rob Lowe may be hilarious, neither were even nominated. It seemed as if none of the students interviewed really knew anything about the Oscars itself.
“I haven’t seen them, ever” seemed to be the unanimous answer from Redfern, Clegg, and Pascual. Last year the Oscars had 26.5 million viewers, but it seems as though none of them were teenagers.
Unfortunately, the Oscars soon may be a thing of the past. But for now, they will still remain and have for decades, the epitome of the entertainment industry’s best.
