Some time ago, it was very uncommon for kids to want to buy clothes from second hand stores because it was popular to have the newest things and was often seen as a sign of lower income.
Nowadays, as seen by the ever popular fashion trends at San Luis Obispo High School, thrifting is a new fad that us teens enjoy now, since generations past when that wasn’t the popular thing to do. Just by glancing at our campus with a trained eye, it’s obvious that thrifting is no longer something that is looked down upon.
Gone are the days when the idea of going to a thrift store meant a store full of useless junk. Now, with a little patience and motivation, you can find an abundance of treasures at the thrift store. It seems the main reason for thrifting is to find those unique pieces of clothing that no one else could possibly have.
“I go thrift shopping because the clothes are cheap and you can find really cool things there,” said senior Leslie Graciano.
Because San Luis Obispo is always pushing towards a more sustainable way of doing things, finding a thrift store is not hard. If you ask any student, they could probably tell you that they visit a thrift shop frequently. It wouldn’t be surprising to find out that many stores around here were missing out because of the upscale and exclusive second-hand stores in the area.
“I literally go thrifting almost every weekend. Sometimes, I get there and there’s nothing good and sometimes, I find the best things,” said senior Minea Olson.
With the new technologies since the despise of thrift shopping, it is also quite common to go thrifting and buy cheap clothes, but then resell them on apps such as Depop or Poshmark. It is obvious that as technology has advanced so has the trends, especially in fashion. Many influencers on social media platforms, such as Instagram, strongly advertise shopping at thrift shops and basing your style off of what you find there.
Luckily, times have changed to where it is acceptable to shop for your clothing at second-hand stores. Not only is it sustainable, but it is a good example of how generations are more accepting of certain things that were deemed unpopular years ago.
