Students at San Luis Obispo High School are getting pumped about the new movie, “IT Ends”. Movies like IT tend to get in the spotlight where millions of people see them. But what few students are speaking about is the new movie titled “LIKE” on the overuse of social media and the effect it has on youths brains. The movie will be screening  tonight at 6:00 p.m. in the multi purpose room at Laguna Middle School. 

   The movie “LIKE” is about the draw of screens and the effect it has on the brain.

   “For the most part the film is filled with the hope, the recourses, and the tools,” said the “like” CEO Scilla Andreen.

  The film focuses on the facts of social media, not just opinions and beliefs. “LIKE” talks about what social media and phones do to your brain, and what they found is kind of concerning. 

  “There’s a lot of data that shows that people get addicted to their phones. The same addiction center lights up as they would if you were using heroin. And also if your in love with someone there’s another part of your brain that lights up on an MRI. And people have that same part of their brain light up about their phone,” said adolescent medical specialist Dr. Cora Breuner.

  As kids, our brains are still developing and changing. Is it possible that phones are hindering this development? 

  Expressions asked around to see if any students would be interested in watching this kind of movie. 

 “Yeah I would, I feel like that would be cool to see what happens,” said freshman Makena Johnson. 

  “I make films about topics that I’m really curious about. And then I want to share them with kids, family, and educators in an environment where people will then have the conversation after,” said Andreen. 

 The movie will have spanish subtitles as well as a version in Spanish. There is no RSVP required and the movie is only 50 minutes long. So take some time this evening to go see “LIKE” and understand a little more about what’s really going on.
