You think you can draw? Think again. San Luis Obispo High School junior Heidi Hernandez shows us what true artistic talent looks like through her modern take on a plethora of artistic subjects and styles. Using bright colors and a mixture of different inspirations and themes to “reform reality”, Hernandez creates masterpieces that capture what she feels at the time of creation. If you’re interested in seeing Hernandez’s artwork, you can view it on February 15 at the art show taking place in the library.
Expressions: When did you first start exploring your artistic talent?
Junior Heidi Hernandez: Basically, my mom just gave me some art supplies and I just started to paint. And I guess I became really good at around freshman year, but it’s always been something I’ve done.
Expressions: Where do you get your inspiration from?
Hernandez: I get some inspiration from artists on Instagram. I don’t know, I don’t really have a specific style so I just look at whatever artist I think is cool at the time and use it to help inspire my next piece.
Expressions: Do you mainly just paint?
Hernandez: Well I mainly paint with acrylic and oil, but I also draw a lot and do henna tattoos.
Expressions: We first came to you to talk about your self-portraits, but what else do you do?
Hernandez: Oh it’s not just self-portraits, I do like some animals and pretty much anything that catches my eye. It’s not just self portraits. I did an octopus once for Mr. Johnson, that was pretty cool.
Expressions: Do you plan on going to art school?
Hernandez: I don’t know if I want to. I know I’m really good, but I want to just keep it as a hobby.
