Of the many clubs on the San Luis Obispo High School campus, joining Tigers Fight Cancer club is one of the best ways to make a difference in the school and the community.
The SLOHS Tigers Fight Cancer club brings students together with a shared mission: to provide volunteer hours to students and to help spread cancer awareness. Meeting once a month on Wednesdays, the club is very low-commitment while still creating effective change.
TFC has hosted and participated in many popular fundraisers on campus, such as selling SloDoCo doughnuts at the homecoming football game and putting on bake sales at volleyball games. Ever wondered about the pink ribbon stickers the football players wear on their helmets during October? TFC is behind it, helping to spread breast cancer awareness.
“Last year we kind of got up and running, so we had lots of fundraisers we were able to do. Our biggest one was our ‘fun run’ that happened in the spring. That was probably our biggest accomplishment because we made a lot of money and we were able to spread the word about our nonprofit and club,” said junior and vice president of TFC Holland Oetman.
Students find club meetings to be engaging and informative. Club officers discuss previous and upcoming fundraisers and how members can participate. There is always food for members to enjoy at meetings, and often sign up sheets for volunteer opportunities.
“TFC is a fun club with pizza and friends that’s directed toward helping people in our community fight cancer,” said junior David Noland, an active member in the club.
Tigers Fight Cancer club’s next meeting on December 4th is a very special occasion. The money raised from the spring fun run will be granted to the recipient. This event will be very important to attend, as it is the club and nonprofit’s first ever celebration and grant.
Be sure to show up to witness this amazing moment in SLOHS club history (and enjoy pizza, of course)!
