COVID-19 has dramatically impacted the ability of many extracurriculars to function, one of which is San Luis Obispo High School Drama Club. Theatre, which thrives off of in-person rehearsals and performances, has been reduced to communicating over Zoom.
Yet, this hasn’t stopped seniors and Drama Club presidents and seniors Evan Clausen and Maggie Zuniga from planning an exciting year.
“We’re currently working on our first attempt at a virtual cabaret, where we’re having everyone sing songs that are theatre villain-related that they record and send in, then we stitch it all together into a little cabaret show,” said Clausen.
The cabaret isn’t the only thing planned for this school year, and the club is already looking forward to their next upcoming project.
“Starting in November we are going to be starting the process of putting on a virtual production of a play with full auditions and rehearsals. Hopefully we will be showing the performance before winter break,” said Zuniga.
As the semester progresses, everyone’s minds are on the prospect of returning back to campus in 2021 when the new semester begins.
Clausen and Zuniga are no exception, especially when considering their club’s future.
“I’d love to go back to do shows if we end up coming back next semester, but we’ve been told that it is unlikely that we’d get to do anything in the new theatre. We’ll see how this develops, though, as we get closer to the move back,” said Clausen.
With distance learning, it may be difficult for people to feel like they can get involved with new extracurriculars, especially new students who are unfamiliar with the school. Nevertheless, the Drama Club is eager for new members.
“I’m really looking forward to getting more underclassmen involved. We have a lot of seniors and we will all be leaving, we need to get some new members to keep it going once we’re gone. I’ve already seen some awesome underclassmen and I can’t wait to get to know them more,” said Zuniga.
SLOHS Drama Club will happily accept any students who want to become members.
“For people hoping to get involved, we have a Google Classroom that we post updates on as they come. The code is HEKQFAR. We hope to get as many people involved as possible as we prepare for some cool virtual stuff for this year,” said Clausen.
