As the COVID-19 shelter-at-home order continues, San Luis Obispo High School students are becoming more and more eager to get out of the house. With the great weather and approaching summer, activities such as hiking, biking, and surfing are too enticing to ignore. Expressions asked three SLOHS students how they have been safely leaving the house and where they recommend going during this time of crisis.
Expressions: How have you stayed active during quarantine?
Sophomore India Drazsnzak: I’ve been going downtown and doing runs, mostly so I can get out of the house.
Junior Chaz Johnson: I have been working in construction and trying to stay in the wilderness like going on hikes and such.
Expressions: Have you hiked during the COVID-19 crisis? Where?
Drazsnazk: I’ve hiked Johnson Ranch and Bishop Peak
Johnson: I’ve hiked up Islay Hill and Cerro San Luis.
Expressions: What other safe, outdoor activities do you recommend?
Drazsnazk: I really like running and swimming — just overall getting outside.
Johnson: I recommend going on a bike ride on the Bob Jones Trail.
Expressions: What are some cool places to visit during this time?
Drazsnazk: It’s cool to go to places that would otherwise be crowded if COVID-19 hadn’t taken place, such as Cuesta Park and exploring the creek through San Luis.
Johnson: I really love the Big Falls Trail. It has some really beautiful views and it’s not super crowded.
Expressions: What are some other ways you have stayed safe while being active in the outdoors?
Drazsnazk: I’ve been running in places that don’t have any people around. I’m generally avoiding areas where there were loads of people.
Johnson: I’ve stayed safe by keeping my distance from others, while always wearing a mask.
