In The National Honors Society (NHS) at San Luis Obispo High School, members are required to do eight hours of community service, increased from three hours last year. NHS did this because they felt it was more reflective of the kind of students involved in the club.
“We are getting a 4.0, we are working hard, and most of these kids already get more than eight hours, so by raising the hours, we are making sure that kids are living up to the standards of our club,” said senior Raegan Lunceford.
On October 10, NHS had their first of three meetings this trimester, where they talked about community service hours, and what their T-shirt design was going to be. At this meeting, Lunceford thought it was a good idea to raise the hours of community service.
Some NHS members feel that they are setting a good example for her classmates around them by participating in the club. The students that join this club show that they are doing a phenomenal job in their classes, and obtaining a 4.0.
“I think that NHS sets a good example for all the other kids at this school, because it promotes really beneficial things like having good grades, and helping your community,” said junior Kaylie Hall.
Most members agree with the idea of raising the required community service hours.
“The community service part of NHS is really cool, because you are acting in the interest of other parts of your community, and you also earned a spot in this club by doing well in your classes,” Said junior Evan Clausen.
