San Luis Obispo High School students have not seen a Homecoming football game end with a victory in years. History was made as the Tigers came out on top beating Santa Maria High School 21-7.
“For the team, beating Santa Maria was important to us because it was the next step closer to winning a league championship. For the school as a whole, I think the win was important because it marked the beginning of bringing back excitement towards football and everything that goes with it,” said senior varsity defensive end and offensive tackle Charles Lincoln.
The Tigers had been dominating the season prior to Homecoming Week, with a record of 4-2 going into the game.
After losing a close game to Pioneer Valley High School the previous week, the Tigers were ready to fight back once again on their home turf and add another win to their record.
“We kind of had that urge for victory because we took a tough loss. It was a good game, it was a dogfight last week. But this week we came out, we had another dog fight, and we came out on top. Next week we’ve got to come back to work,” said junior running back Anthony Arroyo, who scored two touchdowns for the Tigers to contribute to their Homecoming victory.
Now 5-3, the Tigers are looking ahead not only to the next game, but the possibility of taking a league title.
“There’s obviously a lot of stuff we still need to work on, but I’m proud of how our guys played so hard all night,” said head football coach Pat Johnston after Friday’s game.
