For years, summer has been used as a time for extensive conditioning for the athletes at San Luis Obispo High School. While coaches usually grant the students some breathing time at the beginning of the summer some teams are practicing as soon as it begins. Expressions interviewed Senior Jack Miklik and Senior Kevin Hill of the SLOHS water polo team to find out why they started practicing this early.
Expressions: How do you feel about the early start of practicing?
Senior Jack Miklik: Sometimes summer water polo is fun but sometimes it sucks, like last year we got three weeks off at the beginning of summer, but then had to play until second trimester.
Senior Kevin Hill: I think it’s good because usually we take a break at the end of the summer so it leaves you refreshed or the season.
Expressions: Do you think this is beneficial to you and your teammates?
Miklik: I think it’s good to start with the team like that, it really helps build the team and everybody is friends by the end of the summer so we all work with each other way better.
Hill: Ya, we play like a hundred games so you get a bunch of experience.
Expressions: Will you continue to play water polo during college?
Miklik: No, maybe like club water polo though.
Hill: Maybe.
