On January 20, 2009, Barack Obama became the first black president in the history of the United States, and on Tuesday, January 10, 2017, he delivered his farewell address as his second term as president comes to a close.
Obama spoke on our nation’s accomplishments in the last eight years, including health care and marriage equality. He spoke on treating each other with respect and dignity, highlighting race and the need for the equal treatment of others.
“Regardless of the station we occupy, we have to try harder to start with the premise that each of our fellow citizens loves this country just as much as we do; that they value hard work and family like we do; that their children are just as curious and hopeful and worthy of love as our own” said Obama on Tuesday night.
President Obama also spoke of the future in his speech. He encouraged the nation to remain unified and warned of a nation divided.
“We, as citizens, must remain vigilant against external aggression, we must guard against a weakening of the values that make us who we are” said President Obama.
While the President did discuss President Elect Donald Trump, he did so in a rational manner, reminding our nation to uphold and protect our values.
President Obama left us with an optimistic and insightful farewell address, ending his eight years as President on a bittersweet note.
