From cave drawings to early daguerreotypes, humans have documented their image for centuries not only as an artistic expression but for a historical value as well. Now, in the twenty-first century, we do the same; but why is it constantly viewed as only narcissistic? Front facing camera phones and selfie sticks have revolutionized self-portraits, and social media has allowed that perfect profile picture to be shared with everyone you’ve ever met. We’re often told that this is only a form of selfish validation; but taking selfies is not an act of being self-absorbed, it is an act of confidence.
“Why should someone feel guilty for loving the way they look,” said senior Gabi Morgan. Exposing yourself is vulnerable and should be recognized as an act of bravery. Sometimes I just like to take a picture to acknowledge my existence because, why not?
“I love taking selfies because I’m hot,” said senior Victoria Humphrey.
Selfies are about reminding ourselves how beautiful and unique we are, so let’s stop shaming this healthy self-esteem booster. Yes, Kim Kardashian’s 400-page book, “Selfish“, is a bit excessive, but you should never feel guilty for simply “feeling yourself”.
