Students at San Luis Obispo High School have learned about the Mid-State Fair happening from July 16th to July 27 (the fair usually runs 12 days in late July) in Paso Robles. Many of these students even participate in activities such as carnival rides, music concerts, and livestock competitions, which are particularly appealing to those interested in animal science.
“I’m raising a market goat. I did the same last year, and the most memorable part of the experience was playing cards in the shade of the goat and sheep barn, because it was hot at the time,” said junior Reagon Eatmon
SLOHS’ animal science class enables students to explore areas in veterinary science, physiology, and the anatomy of small animals and livestock. By allowing students to investigate and interact with animals, it presents students with the opportunity to explore beyond the normal course options, like biology and physics, early on.
“This is my first year participating in the Mid-State Fair Livestock show. I’m raising a market lamb to be presented at the show,” said sophomore Malia Priole.
Of course, the livestock show isn’t going to be the only fun part of the Mid-State Fair. The area itself has an abundance of food vendors and carnival rides around every corner. Carnival rides like the “Big Splash,” where you splash people waiting in line, or “Black Out,” a ride that goes so fast you might black out!
“I’ve only been once, but it was so much fun going on all the rides, walking through the rodeo grounds, and seeing the animals that FFA raised and trained. My favorite carnival ride is probably the “Alien Abduction” ride,” said SLOHS Alumni Kimberly Budinger.
Given the remarkable success of previous Mid-State Fairs, from its livestock show, carnival rides, and music concerts, Expressions firmly believes that this year’s event will be a sight to see.
