Among the halls of San Luis Obispo High School are many talented students. Some of these students aspire to make drawings and paintings that they can contribute to the world and call their own. But many don’t get nearly as much recognition as they deserve. Expressions found some of these aspiring and spoke with them about their art. These students include senior Josh Nelson, sophomore Hayley Halls, senior Sarah Nichols and senior Holly Myrick. This is what they had to say.
Expressions: What do you plan to do with your art in the future?
Sophomore Hayley Halls: I would like to continue doing artwork in the future. Artwork is definitely a big part of what I like to do on a daily basis and hopefully I can get better!
Senior Sarah Nichols: I plan on pursuing art as a hobby rather than a career; I don’t think I could live off of selling doodles. I like tattoos, but I don’t like needles, so I might continue to design tats on the side.
Senior Holly Myrick: It’s my dream to become very successful with my art but I would also be okay with being just an art teacher, just as long as I’m drawing I’m happy.
Senior Josh Nelson: Change the world.
Expressions: What does art mean to you?
Halls: Art to me personally means to express yourself in another way, you can make art anything you want it to be. It allows you to be creative and do whatever you want, basically.
Nichols: Art lets me escape from the world, even if it’s just for an hour. It allows me to clear my mind and it’s a great way to express emotions that can’t quite be put into words.
Myrick: It depends on what I draw. My art is special to me, it’s a part of who I am, I know it sounds cheesy but what I love most is seeing my artwork bring joy to others.
Nelson: Art is expression, creation, freedom. Art is the line between comfort and danger. It’s beauty, and its ugly and it’s wonderful. Art is in every single thing every person does. And that’s my favorite thing about it, when you look at everything as art; it all becomes somehow more meaningful and beautiful than an ignorant mind could ever comprehend.
