The student-led Assassins nerf war is still on, and here is the update you have been waiting for.
SLO Assassins is a student-led nerf war, not affiliated with any formal SLOHS organization. Players must “assassinate” other players using nerf guns. There are restrictions to when and where these assassinations can happen, such as not on any SLCUSD campus, not out of a moving vehicle, and not while players are at work, places of worship, or after-school sports or school activities.
So far, the game has been heated, with momentum motivated by a jackpot prize that is currently at $675. There are thirty players remaining, with seniors Mia Clifford and Jared Treichler tied for the most kills.
“I’ve always dreamed about something like this. When I was in elementary school I loved having nerf gun battles, and when I heard about this I was really excited and I was already prepared,” said Treichler. With seven kills each, Treichler and Mia are tied for first, but they are not allies.
“I just wanted to team up with the people I was close with and pick off the enemy one by one. Stay strapped. Assassins is life,” said Treichler.
Fifty players have already been eliminated with the option to respawn for $20. One player who respawned is senior Matthew Davi. Despite this respawn, he was killed a second time by senior Emily Niebuhr.
“The cool thing is, I wasn’t really mad at all [when I was eliminated]. I was kind of relieved to be out of it and I was happy Emily was the one who killed me. It was fun at the beginning, but it kind of got annoying watching out everywhere I went so I didn’t get shot,” said Davi.
Davi is disappointed, however, that he lost the chance to win the jackpot.
“I’m super angry. I don’t have a job, so I was kinda counting on it to keep me funded,” said Davi. Regardless of this lost opportunity, Davi recommends participating in this game if it continues in future years.
“If it happens again, everyone should get involved,” said Davi.
The game ends the Sunday before finals, and the remaining players will split eighty-five percent of the final jackpot. The organizer gets 7.5 percent, and the player with the highest number of kills gets 7.5 percent. Follow @slo.assassins on Instagram to stay updated on the player roster, and players, watch your back!
